New York: Two teenagers in the United States pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to multiple terrorism-related charges after allegedly attempting to detonate explosives in New York City in support of the ISIS group, prosecutors said.
Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were arrested on March 7 following an alleged attempted attack during an anti-Islam protest outside the official residence of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is Muslim.
According to prosecutors, the two suspects—both from Pennsylvania—had discussed plans to kill up to 60 people. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Court documents allege that Kayumi expressed a desire to “start terror” in a conversation recorded on a dashcam inside their vehicle.
Appearing in handcuffs at a federal court in New York City, both defendants denied eight charges against them, including attempting to provide support to a foreign terrorist organisation and use of a weapon of mass destruction.
Prosecutors further said the pair declared allegiance to the ISIS group after being detained by police.
