New York: New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday condemned a viral video showing plainclothes police officers beating a man during an arrest in Brooklyn, calling the incident “extremely disturbing” and confirming that an official investigation is underway.

The cellphone footage appears to show two officers—one in plainclothes—attempting to detain a man inside a wine store, striking him repeatedly in the face and kicking him after he falls to the ground.

“The violence used by NYPD officers in this video is extremely disturbing and unacceptable. Officers should never treat a person this way. The NYPD is conducting a full investigation into this incident,” Mamdani said in a post on X.

Authorities said the officers may have mistakenly identified the man, who is Black, as a drug suspect before attempting to arrest him inside the store on Tuesday. The officers involved have since been placed on modified duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the footage as “upsetting,” adding that further details would be provided as the inquiry progresses.
