San Francisco-based tech company Snap, the parent firm of Snapchat, has announced the layoff of around 1,000 employees as it looks to improve efficiency through artificial intelligence.

The cuts affect about 16% of its full-time workforce and also include more than 300 unfilled positions, according to CEO Evan Spiegel in a company memo.

Spiegel said rapid advances in AI are helping teams reduce repetitive work and operate more efficiently, allowing smaller groups to make faster progress on key projects.

The company, which also operates an Asia-Pacific hub in Singapore, is aiming to reduce over $500 million in annual costs by 2026 as it moves toward profitability.

Snap has faced multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years as it competes with platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

The announcement comes amid wider job cuts across the tech sector, with tens of thousands of layoffs reported globally as companies increasingly integrate AI into their operations.
