BUENOS AIRES: A fresh trial commenced Tuesday to determine if seven medical professionals are responsible for the death of football legend Diego Maradona. The defendants, including his neurosurgeon and psychiatrist, face charges of negligent homicide following Maradona’s 2020 fatal heart attack while recovering from brain surgery.

This retrial follows the annulment of a previous case in May 2025 due to judicial ethics violations. Prosecutors argue the medical team acted in a ‘reckless’ manner, providing inadequate care in what they described as a ‘theatre of horror.’

Conversely, the defense maintains that Maradona’s death was an inevitable result of his long-standing health struggles. If convicted, the medical staff faces up to 25 years in prison. Over 120 witnesses are expected to testify through July.
