SARAJEVO: The government of the Bosniak-Croat Federation has moved to jumpstart a long-stalled natural gas project involving business associates of President Donald Trump. The legislative step is intended to advance the Southern Interconnection project, a pipeline designed to link Bosnia’s gas network to an LNG terminal on Croatia’s Krk island.

The initiative aims to diversify Bosnia’s energy supply and end its total dependence on Russian gas imports. However, the project has faced years of political deadlock due to internal disagreements over which state-owned entity should manage the pipeline.

Recent interest from US-based investors linked to the Trump administration has brought fresh international attention to the infrastructure plan. Local authorities are now seeking to accelerate the legal framework required to begin construction, viewing the pipeline as a vital component of national energy security amidst ongoing global market instability.

While the project is seen as a strategic move to align with Western energy networks, critics and opposition figures have raised concerns regarding the transparency of the deal and the influence of foreign business interests on domestic energy policy. The government maintains that the interconnection is a priority for economic stability and regional integration.
