DODOMA: Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered government officials to travel collectively in a single bus for official assignments, a measure to curb public spending and fuel consumption.
The directive, issued Wednesday during a swearing-in ceremony at the Chamwino State House, follows a 33% surge in domestic fuel prices driven by the ongoing Middle East conflict and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The President announced she would immediately restructure her own motorcade. While her entourage typically includes over 30 vehicles, it will now be limited to a ‘core convoy’ consisting only of her escort, police, and a backup vehicle.
"From now on, wherever I go, all officials will travel together in one bus," she stated, emphasising that the move aims to reinforce discipline in the use of public resources.
The President also ordered a halt to all non-essential government travel and warned the business community against predatory pricing on existing stock. As the country taps into its three months of strategic reserves, President Samia appealed for public patience, describing the crisis as a global phenomenon rather than a domestic failure.
