PHNOM PENH: Cambodian lawmakers have officially approved a long-debated anti-cybercrime law, marking a significant shift in the nation’s digital regulatory landscape. The legislation, passed by the National Assembly, is designed to combat a wide range of illicit activities including hacking, online fraud, and the spread of false information.

Proponents of the bill argue that it provides essential legal mechanisms to protect the public and national infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated digital threats. They emphasize that the law is a necessary step toward modernizing Cambodia's legal framework to keep pace with the rapid expansion of internet usage and e-commerce within the country.

However, the law has encountered substantial criticism from international human rights organizations and digital privacy advocates. Concerns have been raised regarding the broad and sometimes vague language used in the text, which critics fear could be weaponized to suppress political dissent and restrict freedom of expression.

Critics argue that provisions regarding ‘false information’ and ‘incitement’ could be used to target journalists and activists. While the government maintains the law is strictly for cybersecurity and public order, the international community is monitoring how enforcement will affect the open nature of Cambodia's digital space.
