Ron DeSantis signs Bill Renaming Florida’s Palm Beach Airport after Donald Trump

TALLAHASSEE :Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has formally signed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport as the ‘President Donald J. Trump International Airport.’ The rebranding, scheduled to take effect from 1 July, remains subject to final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). While the FAA acknowledges that such naming rights are primarily local decisions, the agency must still oversee essential administrative updates to global navigational charts and aviation databases.
The airport serves as the primary gateway to Palm Beach County, a region of immense political significance where Donald Trump frequently travels to his Mar-a-Lago resort.
Highlighting the commercial coordination behind the move, an entity associated with the Trump Organisation reportedly filed a trademark application for the new name last month. The legislation ensures that the county maintains ‘perpetual and unrestricted’ rights to the title and its abbreviations for official use without incurring licensing fees.
However, the decision has sparked a debate within the state. Florida House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell issued a critical statement suggesting that the transition could cost taxpayers approximately $5 million. Opponents argue that such expenditure is unnecessary, while supporters view the gesture as a fitting tribute to the former president’s deep ties to the area.
This renaming is part of a broader, concerted effort by the former president and his allies to weave his name and image into the fabric of American institutions. Similar proposals have surfaced in recent years regarding the Kennedy Centre, the US Institute of Peace, and even government digital platforms. From high-value ‘gold card’ visas to commemorative coins and military hardware, the drive to memorialise his legacy remains a central theme of his political movement.
