Air Defence Interception Triggers Brief Disruption at Dubai International Airport

Dubai: Operations at Dubai International Airport were briefly disrupted after air-defence systems intercepted an aerial strike over the city, with falling debris causing a minor incident near the airport area, authorities said.

Passengers at the airport were temporarily moved into train tunnels as a precaution after several loud blasts were heard and warning alerts sounded. Witnesses near the airport reported hearing a loud “boom” overhead as interception systems were activated.

In a statement posted by the Dubai Media Office, the Government of Dubai said the situation involved “a minor incident resulting from the fall of debris after an interception,” adding that it had been successfully contained.

“No injuries have been reported,” officials said, while also denying social media claims that there had been a direct incident or explosion at the airport.

The falling debris and shrapnel reportedly came after air-defence systems intercepted a strike in the skies over Dubai. Aircraft bound for Dubai International Airport were seen circling at a distance shortly before the interception took place as a precautionary measure.

Authorities said the situation was under control and confirmed that no damage or casualties had been reported.
