Astronomers Predict February 19 as Likely Start of Ramadan

Muslim communities across the Middle East are looking ahead to Ramadan 2026 as regional astronomy experts have shared predictions on when the holy month might begin. According to the Emirates Astronomical Society and other scientific bodies, Thursday, February 19, 2026 is the most probable start date for Ramadan in the UAE and much of the Arab world, though the official date will still rely on actual sighting of the new moon.
Astronomers note that the crescent marking the beginning of Ramadan will emerge between sunset and nightfall on Tuesday, February 17, but its visibility is expected to be limited across the region due to the moon’s position and timing relative to sunset. As a result, many countries will likely complete the lunar month of Sha’ban and begin fasting on February 19.
In some areas, especially those that rely heavily on local moon-sighting committees, officials may still look for the crescent on February 18, which could lead a few countries to mark the first day of fasting on February 19 or, if the moon is seen earlier, on February 18.
Ramadan, observed through fasting from dawn until sunset, is a period of spiritual focus, community prayer and charitable giving. Once the crescent is sighted in the coming weeks, religious authorities in each country will issue official confirmations of the holy month’s start.
