Lula Criticises Trump’s Peace Board, Warns It Could Undermine UN

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has sharply criticised U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing him of attempting to reshape the global order by creating a new international body that parallels or undermines the United Nations. Lula’s comments, made during a public address this week, centre on Trump’s newly launched “Board of Peace”, a peace and conflict-resolution initiative unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Lula charged that, instead of strengthening existing multilateral institutions like the United Nations, Trump is pushing a model in which he would effectively control a global organisation tailored to his priorities. The Brazilian leader warned that this approach threatens the core principles of multilateral cooperation and diplomacy, saying it could reduce the role of the UN Charter and the established international system. Lula’s remarks reflect broader concerns among world leaders and diplomats that the Board of Peace which Trump chairs and which some nations host with membership fees may rival or dilute the authority of the United Nations.
The criticism comes as geopolitical tensions rise, with some U.S. allies hesitant about the board’s structure and mission, and others questioning whether the new initiative serves peacebuilding goals or reinforces unilateral influence in global affairs. Lula has also underscored Brazil’s commitment to traditional multilateralism, engaging with leaders such as China’s Xi Jinping to affirm the ongoing relevance of the UN framework.
