Trump Criticises Canada Over Greenland Stance, Warns China’s ‘will eat them up’

US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Canada for opposing proposals linked to Greenland’s strategic defence architecture, warning that hesitation from Western allies could open the door for China to expand its influence in the Arctic region.
Speaking during a campaign-related address, Trump accused Canada of undermining collective security interests by resisting elements of what he described as a “Golden Dome” approach to Arctic defence, a reference to layered missile and surveillance systems designed to protect northern territories. He argued that failure to act decisively would leave the region vulnerable to rival powers, singling out China as a long-term strategic threat.
Trump’s remarks come amid renewed global attention on Greenland’s geopolitical importance. The vast Arctic island, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, hosts critical US military infrastructure and lies along emerging shipping routes that are becoming more accessible due to climate change. Both China and Russia have stepped up diplomatic, scientific and commercial engagement in the Arctic in recent years, prompting concern among NATO members.
Canadian officials have previously expressed reservations about expanding large-scale missile defence systems in the Arctic, citing environmental, sovereignty and diplomatic considerations. Ottawa has emphasised the need for coordination with Indigenous communities and international partners before pursuing major defence initiatives in the region.
Trump, who has repeatedly highlighted Greenland’s strategic value since his presidency, argued that indecision among allies could weaken North American and transatlantic security at a time of rising global competition.
