The UK government has launched a revitalised International Education Strategy, marking a new direction for projecting its academic influence globally. Through a new Education Sector Action Group, the government aims to collaborate with the International Education Champion, universities, and schools to remove trade barriers and enhance British skills offerings in high-growth markets. This revised strategy has officially removed targets for the number of overseas students at domestic institutions, focusing instead on boosting education exports via international campuses and digital learning.

A key objective is to increase the value of UK education exports to £40 billion annually by 2030. To achieve this, the government is engaging with focus countries such as Indonesia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam, while also targeting emerging economies like India, Brazil, Mexico, and Pakistan. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson highlighted that this expansion will provide millions with access to a world-class British education, fostering growth within the UK.

The strategy further showcases significant achievements, such as the University of Southampton being the first foreign university to establish a campus under new regulations, and plans to launch nine new British university campuses abroad by late 2025. Trade Minister Chris Bryant stressed that the sector's success is driven by AI-enabled innovation and skills development, enhancing the UK's global education reputation.

In addition to economic advantages, the government recognises education as an essential element of soft power, noting that British universities have produced over 50 current world leaders. However, this expansion will increase domestic oversight, with universities facing stricter compliance standards, including potential recruitment caps. While maintaining the integrity of the Graduate Route for international students, the government has committed to enforcing visa rules to ensure alignment with the broader migration framework.
