Russian Strikes Kill At Least 15 in Kyiv, Surrounding Region

Kyiv: At least 15 people were killed and several others injured as Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, Ukrainian authorities claimed on Wednesday. The attack caused damage to residential neighbourhoods, warehouses, and commercial facilities, while emergency services continued rescue operations amid fears that more casualties were buried beneath the wreckage.

Shortly after midnight, air raid sirens sounded as waves of ballistic missiles and drones hit Ukraine's capital and surrounding regions. Fires broke out throughout various districts, and explosions were recorded in several parts of Kyiv. Local officials described the onslaught as one of the worst attacks on the region in recent weeks, resulting in massive destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Rescue teams, firefighters, and medical workers worked all day to inspect damaged buildings and assist survivors. Authorities warned that the death toll might grow as activities proceeded. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised the strikes and urged more international air- defence cooperation, particularly additional Patriot missile batteries, to counter Russia's increased use of ballistic missiles.

Russia's Defence Ministry stated that the strikes targeted military supply facilities, but Ukraine claimed that residential areas and civilian infrastructure took the brunt of the attack. The current shelling comes as both sides escalate their long-range attacks, with Ukraine now conducting midnight drone strikes on Russian targets.
