Muscat: Sharada Iyer, the sister of Indian singer Chitra Iyer, died in a trekking accident in Oman’s Jebel Shams region on January 2. She was 56.
Sharada, an Indian expatriate based in Muscat and originally from Thazhava in Kerala, India, was trekking with a group along designated trails in the Wadi Ghul area of Jebel Shams, located in Oman’s Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.
Authorities have not released details on the exact cause of death but said the area is known for its steep cliffs and rugged terrain, which can pose risks to trekkers.
Chitra Iyer confirmed her sister’s death in an emotional tribute shared on social media on Sunday. In an Instagram post, she expressed her grief, remembering her sister’s spirited personality and close bond with her family.
In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Run along, you feisty little banshee of a sister! You run too fast! But I’ll catch up… eventually… soon, I promise. Love you, you insufferable monster.” She added, “What am I going to do? How will I ever carry on living without your annoying voice jabbering nonstop at the other end of the phone? Or screaming from the next room? Or just... being annoying. Being the brat. Being you.”
Sharada Iyer was a former manager with Oman Air and had been living in Oman for several years.
