Amsterdam: Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport cancelled around 450 flights on Monday morning due to snow and icy conditions, with authorities warning that the number could rise as severe winter weather continues to affect much of Europe, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

Snow, rain and freezing temperatures caused widespread disruption to air and rail travel in the Netherlands. In addition to the flight cancellations at Schiphol, train services in the greater Amsterdam area and the Utrecht region were brought to a standstill.

Airlines across Europe were also impacted. Swiss airline SWISS cancelled seven flights to and from Amsterdam on Monday, including early morning services between Amsterdam and Zurich. The carrier said an evening flight was still scheduled to operate, though further changes remained possible. In the previous days, SWISS had already cancelled 17 connections to Amsterdam due to the wintry conditions. Other airlines were affected as well, with a KLM flight from Zurich to Amsterdam among those cancelled.

Severe weather caused further disruption across the continent. In Scotland, hundreds of schools were closed, while large parts of the UK were placed under severe weather warnings for heavy snowfall as many people returned to work following the Christmas break.

Rail services experienced delays in Poland, and the Czech Republic recorded extreme temperatures, with minus 30.6 degrees Celsius measured in the Bohemian Forest near the German border. Authorities reported numerous road accidents caused by icy conditions, particularly in low mountain regions.

Heavy snowfall was also reported in parts of the Balkans, including Romania and Bosnia. In Romania’s Carpathian region of Transylvania, several villages were cut off after access roads became impassable.

In Sweden, flight cancellations were reported at Stockholm Airport, with further snowfall forecast later in the day. Austria’s meteorological service issued a cold weather warning for the western regions, where temperatures are expected to fall as low as minus 17 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, though no significant snowfall is forecast.

Authorities across affected countries urged travellers to check travel updates and exercise caution as winter conditions persist.
