Afghan Ex-CIA Worker Accused in DC National Guard Shooting
An Afghan man accused of shooting two National Guard soldiers in Washington, D.C., previously worked with the CIA in Afghanistan, according to CIA Director.
The Biden administration had justified bringing the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, to the United States in September 2021 because of his prior work with the U.S. government, including the CIA, officials said.
The two injured soldiers, Andrew Wolfe and Sarah Beckstrom, have undergone surgery but remain in critical condition.
U.S. Attorney for D.C., Jeanine Pirro, said Lakanwal drove thousands of miles across the country from Washington state before carrying out the attack on Wednesday.
During the incident, Lakanwal was shot by another soldier and hospitalized. Former U.S. President Donald Trump described him as "severely wounded."
The suspect’s background has made the case a political issue, raising questions about the safety of refugee programs under President Biden, according to North America correspondent Nomia Iqbal.
