Bahrain 7th in global online service index
The Global Innovation Index 2015 (GII), published by Johnson Cornell University, the Business School for the World (INSEAD) and World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), has highlighted the achievements made by Bahrain in the Information and Communication Technology sector.
The GII has been prepared after studying 141 economies, which represent 95.1 per cent of the world’s population and 98.6pc of global GDP. The core of the GII Report consists of a ranking of world economies’ innovation capabilities and results.
According to the survey, globally, Bahrain stands in the 7th position in the Government's online service index. In the Middle East and North African region, Bahrain achieved the first rank in the same category, highlighting the achievements of the government in providing services online. Other GCC countries like the UAE achieved the 12th position in the same list, while Saudi stood at the 18th position, followed by Oman (26), Qatar (37) and Kuwait (52).
Bahrain fared well in the ICT use index also, achieving the 16th rank globally and the first rank in the MENA region. The UAE achieved the second rank in the MENA region in the same category, appearing in the 21st position globally.
In the online e-participation index, Bahrain achieved the third rank (globally 14th rank) in the region.
In the total computer software spending out of total Gross Domestic Production (GDP), the Kingdom achieved the first rank in the region and the 27th position globally.
Recently, International Telecommunication Union recognised the role of Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa in developing ICT and presented him with the award for Sustainable Development in ICT. Other areas, where Bahrain achieved a significant milestone are electricity output and pupil- teacher ratio in the secondary education. In the electricity output category (kWh per capita), Bahrain earned the fourth rank, while Iceland, Kuwait and Norway won the first three ranks respectively.
In the pupil-teacher ratio, Bahrain has done satisfactory progress, earning the 28th rank globally. Bahrain is placed the 59th in the overall global ranking, which is decided using various indicators to calculate the innovation capabilities and measurable results of various countries.
