The Southern Municipal Council has unanimously approved a proposal to reallocate a government-owned plot in Hajiyat for the construction of a new mosque to serve residents of Block 929.

The land, currently under the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, will transfer to the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments.

Fourth Constituency Councillor Mohammed Hussein Daraj submitted the proposal, stating it responds to repeated resident requests for a local mosque. He noted that many worshippers, particularly elderly residents, currently travel to neighbouring areas due to the lack of nearby facilities.

Council members said the decision follows a detailed study highlighting growing demand for prayer space in the area, where existing facilities in nearby districts are often overcrowded.

The proposal will now be referred to relevant authorities for further procedures and implementation.
