Winfred Yavi finished eighth yesterday in the women’s 5,000 metres at the Wanda Diamond League Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Rome.

The race was won by Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw in a world-leading 14:18.41, ahead of Aleshign Baweke in 14:18.54 and Freweyni Hailu in 14:18.94, as the leading group produced a rapid finish at the Stadio Olimpico.

Senayet Getachew (14:22.37), Medina Eisa (14:22.51) and Hirut Meshesha (14:22.56) followed in a tightly packed top group, with seven athletes finishing inside 14:23 after a steady early tempo turned into a decisive final surge.

Yavi, Bahrain’s reigning Olympic champion, was stepping down from her usual 3,000m steeplechase for a rare 5,000m appearance and crossed in 14:30.06.

The Bahraini record holder stayed in contention through 3,000m in 8:41.19 but lost ground in the closing kilometre as the pace lifted sharply among the leaders.

The race produced multiple season bests and one of the deepest collective finishes of the Diamond League season.
