US House Approves Ukraine Aid Bill as 18 Republicans Break Ranks

Washington DC : The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill providing military and reconstruction aid to Ukraine while imposing new sanctions on Russia, with 18 Republicans joining Democrats to support the measure.

The legislation passed by a 226-195 vote and would provide more than $1 billion in assistance for Ukraine, along with billions more in financing for its defense efforts.

The vote marks another instance of Republicans breaking with President Donald Trump and party leadership on key foreign policy issues. The bill was brought to a vote after supporters used a rare procedural move to bypass House leaders.

Despite its passage in the House, the legislation faces an uncertain future as it must still clear the Senate and be signed by Trump before becoming law.

The vote came amid growing debate in Washington over U.S. involvement in overseas conflicts. Separately, some Republicans recently joined Democrats in supporting a measure seeking to limit further U.S. military action in Iran.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed calls for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to end the war.
