The increasing role of Bahrain police officers working under the community service umbrella was emphasised by a leading police official within the Interior Ministry.

The Director of Community Policing, Colonel Abdulla Rashed Burashed Alaznzi said the idea of establishing a community police was in line with the concept of true citizenship as envisaged by the reform project of His Majesty King Hamad.

“The police system in Bahrain is a role model and a source of pride at the global level and in line with the basic pillars of the National Action Charter and within the great humanitarian values and principles.

“The relationship between the police and the individual is not limited to fighting crime within its traditional role known as inference, arrest and inspection, but it is a pivotal relationship necessary to build confidence in the law enforcement authority and to face challenges and risks at all levels through close cooperation to prevent crime and avoid crises.”

The scope of community policing encompasses the knowledge of people’s requirements, protecting families from disintegration, combating wrong behaviours, proper traffic management, tightening control over commercial markets, ensuring safety of students at educational facilities, providing traffic awareness to traffic violators on the streets apart from conducting patrols to monitor abandoned buildings.

The role also includes protecting minors from commenting crimes, combating begging, ensuring easy movement of worshippers for Friday prayers, supporting elderly by making periodic visits to social centres, distribution of meals, medical masks and food materials to labourers.

Colonel Abdulla said the community service from the part of police was of immense significance during the pandemic period. “Members of the Community Service Police played a prominent role and did their best in the participation of the national team to combat Covid-19.”
