Bahrain’s fair judiciary stressed

Bahrain has always been at forefront of countries in the region in holding fair trials. Bahrain Bar Society (BBS) Chairperson Huda Al-Mehzaa defended the Kingdom’s judiciary as she attended the Turkish Lawyers' Union conference in Ankara.
She cited particularly the establishment of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to ensure trial procedures comply with international human rights conventions. Al-Mehzaa presented a paper on fair trials, focusing particularly on the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which was established in compliance with Istanbul Protocol.
I am proud of my country which took the bold step of establishing the unit, as independent statutory body, to consolidate and guarantee fair trial procedures, she said as she addressed the conference, stressing the role of the panel in conducting investigation with any employee, including law-enforcement staff, to ensure defendants are not subjected to torture or duress.
She extended an invitation to heads of associations to visit the Kingdom of Bahrain and get a close look at the SIU practices, stressing the Kingdom’s readiness to provide expertise in this field.
