Pearl trade loses its sheen

Manama

There was a time when people from all over GCC and the world used to come to Bahrain just to buy pearls. It was once the pillar of Bahrain economy.  But, unfortunately that trend is declining as pearl trade in the Kingdom has lost its sheen.

The art of extracting pearl and the professions associated with its promotion and trade are dying in Bahrain, a senior Traditional Market official said.

Something drastic needs to be done to revive pearling and its trade, said Manama Traditional Market Committee Deputy Chairman Mahmood Al Namliti.

"Pearl was immense for Bahrain, the economy used to benefit from it. One would walk into the suq and find the vibrant market place and traders would eagerly show off their latest pearl ornaments to lure customers. That passion and atmosphere have been lost now. Yes, it is true that pearls are not abundant on our shores like it was before, but we can still do more to keep hold of our traditions" he said.

He said the youngsters are unaware about the role played by pearl divers and traders and that they have to learn about the importance of pearl in the development of Bahrain.

"I think an investment would be needed to spark things again. The new generation does not know what pearling is or how it is done," he added.

"Bahrain still has a good reputation for selling good quality pearls. We still have the expertise and the people who are needed to take this industry forward, and that itself is a big bonus for our country,” he said.

“All we need now is that final push from the government side to will revive the sector." he added.
