Bahrain court jails prison guard for smuggling in phones

Manama: An Asian prison guard, who smuggled mobile phones for an inmate in exchange of drugs, has been sentenced to three years in jail. He was also ordered to be deported after he completes his jail term. The inmate was also tried in connection with this case, and was handed down an equal sentence.

According to court files, the inmate exposed the policeman’s crime after the latter failed to live up to his pledge to bring a BlackBerry for him. The Asian man was serving in the Ministry of Interior for two years, and according to court files the inmate offered him shabu in exchange of smuggling a BlackBerry phone into his cell.

The guard was charged with accepting bribes and breach of conduct as well as consuming drugs. The inmate was indicted of possessing illicit drugs and promoting them. Both defendants have been also fined BD100 each for their crimes.
