Bahrain Reach Junior Handball World Cup Despite Semi-Final Loss
Bahrain’s youth handball team missed out on a place in the Asian final by a single goal after losing 32-31 to South Korea in Chuzhou, China, on Saturday.
South Korea led 15-14 at half-time before Bahrain fought back and stayed level with their opponents deep into the second half of the Asian Men’s Junior Handball Championship semi-final.
The Koreans held on in the closing moments to reach the final, while Bahrain will contest the bronze-medal match.
Bahrain has, however, already secured qualification for the 2027 IHF Men’s Junior World Championship in North Macedonia after reaching the Asian semi-finals.
The top four teams at the continental championship qualify for the world tournament, meaning Bahrain’s place was confirmed when they beat Iran in the quarter-finals.
The national side had earlier finished second in their group after wins over Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Oman and hosts China, with their only group-stage defeat coming against Saudi Arabia.
The 2027 World Championship is due to be held from June 23 to July 4.
