Traffic Police Target Trucks Parked on Pavements

Officials say some drivers avoid designated parking bays simply to dodge the fees.
Capital Municipality, working with the General Directorate of Traffic, has launched a field campaign against trucks illegally parked on pavements across the capital. The drive aims to enforce Legislative Decree No. (2) of 1996 on the Occupation of Public Roads, after officials cited widespread violations blocking pedestrians and damaging public facilities.
Under current rules, drivers of trucks, trailers and public transport vehicles caught parking illegally face fines of BD20 to BD100, doubling for repeat offences within a year. Officials said designated truck bays are available, but many drivers park on pavements instead to avoid paying usage fees, shifting costs onto pedestrians and infrastructure.
The campaign follows earlier drives against heavy vehicles in residential areas, including bans on gas cylinder trucks parking near homes. Councillors and MPs have urged stricter rules, citing noise, safety risks and road damage. The municipality pledged continued monitoring with traffic police.
