Public Transport Moves Toward Electric Buses

Fatima Abdulla Al Zayen, Undersecretary for Land Transport and Post at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, affirmed the ministry's commitment to further developing Bahrain's public transport system to enhance its efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

The statement came during her visit to the public bus depot, accompanied by the Bahrain Public Transport Company's executive management, where she reviewed operational readiness and future plans supporting a shift toward a more sustainable transport network.

Al Zayen noted that the public transport network continues to improve and is seeing notable ridership growth, reflecting the system's readiness and ability to maintain reliable service under all conditions.

She also reviewed the depot's preparations for transitioning to electric bus operations, which is part of a broader plan to build an integrated, eco-friendly transport system supporting Bahrain's target of carbon neutrality by 2060.

Plans were also discussed to draw on the experience of parent company Mobico Group, a UK-based international public transport operator, in deploying clean-energy vehicle technology and managing the conversion of bus depots to electric power in line with global best practices.
