Bahrain praised for environmental progress ahead of World Environment Day

Bahrain has developed a “pioneering” legislative and institutional framework to protect the environment while balancing economic development, a parliamentary committee has said.

The Committee on Public Utilities and Environment at the Shura Council made the remarks ahead of World Environment Day, observed by the United Nations on 5 June each year.

The committee, chaired by Dr Mohammed Ali Hassan Ali, said Bahrain’s approach reflects the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and national strategies aimed at promoting sustainability in line with the country’s Economic Vision 2030.

It said the kingdom has succeeded in embedding environmental sustainability into national development plans, while strengthening the role of institutions responsible for environmental protection.

Focus on sustainability and natural resource protection

The committee praised government efforts, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in implementing environmental policies and initiatives.

These include expanding renewable energy projects, protecting biodiversity and wildlife, and improving the management of natural resources.

It also highlighted progress in water sustainability, including national water strategies, wastewater treatment projects, and efforts to improve water efficiency.

Role of Supreme Council for Environment

The committee also commended the work of the Supreme Council for Environment, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, King’s Personal Representative.

It said the council has played a central role in coordinating environmental policies and ensuring their implementation, helping Bahrain respond to environmental and climate-related challenges.

Climate commitments and green initiatives

The statement pointed to Bahrain’s initiatives to address climate change, including the national afforestation programme aimed at increasing green areas and expanding tree cover.

It also referenced efforts to promote environmental awareness and community participation in sustainability initiatives.

Bahrain has previously announced its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2060, alongside plans to expand renewable energy use, improve energy efficiency and adopt cleaner technologies.

Call for continued environmental awareness

The committee said World Environment Day serves as an important opportunity to raise awareness about environmental protection and encourage community involvement.

It stressed that civil society, institutions and individuals all have a role to play in protecting natural resources and supporting national sustainability goals.

The Shura Council, it added, will continue working on updating environmental legislation to keep pace with global environmental challenges and strengthen Bahrain’s long-term sustainability efforts.
