“The Danish Girl” banned in Bahrain, GCC

It’s been widely tipped as a frontrunner at this year’s Oscars, but people in Bahrain and other GCC countries won’t be able to see The Danish Girl, the movie starring Eddie Redmayne as a Danish transgender artist.

While the movie officially opened in Doha last week, on Tuesday the nation’s Ministry of Culture tweeted that they had “communicated with the necessary departments and have banned showing the Danish film on movie screens.”

While the ministry did not provide an official reason, the ban follows online complaints about the “moral depravity” of the movie.

Some took to social media to dispute the ban, while others supported the government’s decision, as a hashtag meaning “No to the screening of The Danish Girl” trended on Twitter.

The Danish Girl is directed by Tom Hooper and loosely based on the life and marriage of Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener while Elbe undergoes a gender transition.

The movie did not make it past the censors in Kuwait, Oman, or Jordan, either, and the UAE also seems to have opted out of screening it.
