Improving everyday services for residents was the focus of discussions during the Southern Municipal Council’s Ordinary Meeting, where members reviewed several proposals aimed at strengthening community facilities across the governorate.

The council, chaired by Abdullah Ibrahim Abdullatif, held its meeting online due to the regional situation, allowing members to continue municipal work while maintaining precautionary measures.

Members approved several committee reports unanimously, reflecting a shared focus on maintaining public spaces, supporting worship facilities and improving neighborhood infrastructure.

One of the key approvals concerned comprehensive maintenance works for Al Ansar Mosque in Bukowarah, located in Block 913 within the sixth constituency. Council members stressed that places of worship remain vital community spaces where residents gather daily, noting that proper maintenance ensures a dignified and comfortable environment for worshippers.

Attention also turned to public parks and walking areas used regularly by families and visitors. Members approved a proposal to establish prayer facilities within gardens and public recreational projects across the Southern Governorate. The initiative seeks to ensure that visitors spending extended time in parks and promenades can easily access appropriate spaces for prayer without leaving the area.

Road conditions following repeated excavation works also drew discussion. Councillors endorsed a recommendation calling for the full rehabilitation of internal roads once service authorities complete infrastructure works, emphasising that residents often face deteriorating streets after digging projects conclude.

Regulatory matters were also reviewed. The council approved a recommendation requiring quarterly inspections of contracts related to car rental yards and exhibition areas, a measure intended to strengthen oversight and ensure transparency in the sector.

Toward the end of the session, members addressed the impact of heavy rainfall that affected parts of the governorate over the past two days. Councillors called for the rapid deployment of drainage teams and additional water tankers in heavily affected areas to ease traffic movement and reduce inconvenience for residents.

Council Chairman Abdullah Ibrahim Abdullatif emphasised that members will continue monitoring the implementation of these decisions, stressing that improving services and protecting residents’ wellbeing remain central priorities for the council.
