Infantino Confirms FIFA Re-Election Bid

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that he will seek re-election for another term in March 2027, despite growing opposition to his leadership from several football confederations.

FIFA reiterated on September 6 that Infantino’s decision to run remains unchanged. He had originally announced his intention to stand for another term during the FIFA Congress in Vancouver in April.

The election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco. Infantino is seeking to continue as FIFA president for the 2027–2031 term.

His decision comes after growing criticism following a now-abandoned proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of FIFA competitions to private investors. The proposal was withdrawn in July after strong opposition from several regional football bodies.

UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have called for Infantino to step down, while African and South American football confederations continue to provide significant support.

Despite the controversy, no other candidate has formally announced a challenge to Infantino’s re-election bid so far.

Infantino has led FIFA since 2016 and was re-elected in 2023 for his current term.
