Buitrago narrowly misses Vuelta stage win

Bahrain Victorious rider Santiago Buitrago came within a second of victory after finishing runner-up on Stage 14 of the Vuelta a España yesterday.
The Colombian produced a strong ride on the 154.5-kilometre route from Jaen to Sierra de La Pandera, joining teammate Pello Bilbao in the day's breakaway before challenging for the win on the final climb.
Buitrago made his first move with around four kilometres remaining and attacked again inside the final kilometre before leading into the last 300 metres.
However, Tudor Pro Cycling Team's Marco Brenner passed him in the closing corners to take the stage by just one second, while Cristian Rodriguez of XDS Astana finished third, 11 seconds behind.
Despite narrowly missing out on the win, Buitrago retained his lead in the mountains classification.
"It was another hard stage here at La Vuelta, and once again the team was incredible," Buitrago said.
"I didn't want to leave everything to the sprint, so I decided to anticipate in the final metres, but I was beaten at the end. I think I have good legs, and I hope to recover well ahead of next week."
