60 Mosques to Be Opened and Upgraded Across Bahrain
Several municipal council chairmen, clerics and religious scholars have praised the directive of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to open, renovate and rehabilitate 60 mosques under the Sunni and Jaafari Endowments across all governorates of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
They said the move reflects a long-standing commitment to maintaining and honouring houses of worship, while ensuring a suitable environment for prayers and religious activities, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
In statements to the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), officials noted that the initiative highlights continuous support for religious work and strengthens the role of mosques as centres of worship, guidance and community values in Bahraini society.
Abdullah Ibrahim Abdulatif, Chairman of the Southern Municipal Council, said the directive demonstrates Bahrain’s dedication to maintaining mosques and reinforcing religious values. He added that the project meets the needs of citizens across various areas by providing well-equipped mosques that ensure comfort for worshippers.
He stressed that mosque rehabilitation also enhances infrastructure in residential neighbourhoods, as mosques play a key role in strengthening social ties and improving quality of life. The initiative also takes into account the needs of the elderly and people with disabilities, reflecting Bahrain’s commitment to inclusive religious services.
Engineer صالح طاهر طرادة, Chairman of the Capital Trustees Board, described the directive as part of a sustainable development vision that keeps pace with urban expansion and population growth. He noted that cooperation between executive authorities, municipal councils and the community ensures that mosque needs are properly identified and projects are implemented to high standards.
Religious scholars also highlighted the broader impact of the initiative. Sheikh Kazem Al Hawaj said the project carries a strategic dimension by preserving Bahrain’s religious and architectural heritage and protecting the spiritual identity of neighbourhoods. He added that caring for mosques strengthens the Kingdom’s religious and cultural standing and promotes moderation and coexistence.
Dr. Adel Al Marzouqi said upgrading mosques provides a peaceful and comfortable environment for citizens and residents to perform prayers, particularly during Ramadan when attendance significantly increases. He emphasised that mosques serve as centres of guidance, awareness and moral values, contributing to social stability and national unity.
Sheikh Maytham Al Daggas noted that covering all governorates ensures fair distribution of services and development projects across cities and villages, supporting Bahrain’s comprehensive development journey.
Sheikh Mohammed Zaman added that maintaining mosques reinforces religious identity and promotes moderation, while also strengthening community bonds and national cohesion.
The initiative’s timing ahead of Ramadan further underscores its importance, as mosques prepare to welcome large numbers of worshippers during the holy month.
