Sweden to Deploy Fighter Jets and Warships to Finland to Guard Border

Helsinki: Sweden will deploy Jas 39 Gripen fighter jets and a naval corvette to Finland to assist in airspace monitoring and territorial defense along NATO’s eastern flank, Finnish defence officials announced.

The joint deployment, scheduled to run through at least the end of 2026, comes in direct response to a request from Helsinki following a deteriorating regional security situation. 

Finnish officials noted that integrating Swedish air and naval assets will significantly strengthen surveillance along Finland's 1,340-kilometre border with Russia, freeing up domestic Finnish defence resources to counter potential territorial violations. Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson added that Stockholm stands ready to deploy additional ground-based anti-drone systems later this autumn if needed.

The military reinforcement follows heightened security concerns across the Baltic region, driven by stray military drone incursions linked to ongoing hostilities and long-range strikes targeting strategic infrastructure near the Russian border. The operational deployment marks a significant deepening of bilateral defense integration between NATO’s two newest member states.
