Heavy Gunfire and Explosions Ring Out Across Niger’s Capital

Niamey: Heavy gunfire and explosions erupted across several strategic areas of Niger's capital, Niamey, early Saturday morning, targeting key security installations and government infrastructure.

Security sources report that armed attackers launched coordinated assaults on Base 101, a major military facility located at Diori Hamani International Airport, while simultaneously attempting to breach the outer security perimeter surrounding the presidential palace.

Heavy exchanges of gunfire persisted for several hours before Nigerien defense forces secured the sites. Security officials later stated that search operations were launched and the immediate threat had been neutralized, though the exact identity of the attackers remains unconfirmed.

The coordinated strikes mark a major breach in the capital's security under General Abdourahamane Tchiani's military government, which seized power in a July 2023 coup. Despite forming a regional defense bloc with neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger continues to face severe security threats from ongoing insurgencies linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates across the Sahel region.
