Parliament is set to discuss a proposal on Tuesday to build a national stadium in Muharraq Governorate.
The initiative, submitted by MPs Khalid Buanaq, Hisham Al Awadhi and Second Deputy Speaker Ahmed Qarata, aims to improve sports facilities, support local clubs, and allow Bahrain to host multiple competitions simultaneously.
MP Khalid Buanaq said Muharraq “needs modern sports facilities that meet athletes’ needs” and strengthen club performance in the domestic league. He added that a new stadium could attract local and international events, boost sports tourism, and expand competition venues across the kingdom.
The proposal highlights four main benefits: enhancing sports infrastructure, providing clubs with better training and competition venues, attracting tournaments and tourism, and distributing sports facilities more evenly nationwide.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs welcomed the goals of the plan, noting sport’s importance in Bahrain, but clarified that it is not responsible for implementing such projects.
Parliament’s Services Committee recommended approving the proposal, with unanimous support from its members.
