Bahrain Launches Second Phase of Ghaf Tree Planting Drive
His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa inaugurated the second phase of the Ghaf tree planting initiative, reaffirming the Kingdom of Bahrain’s continued commitment to strengthening environmental security and addressing climate change challenges.
His Highness underscored that Bahrain is advancing national efforts that align with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. He noted that the Kingdom is moving steadily forward with plans and initiatives aimed at embedding environmental sustainability, improving the management efficiency of natural resources, and raising community awareness on the importance of environmental protection.
The remarks were made as His Highness planted a Ghaf tree in the presence of several senior officials and dignitaries, including Fahad Mohammed bin Kardous Al Ameri, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Kingdom of Bahrain. The ceremony marked the launch of the second phase of the initiative, which aims to expand Ghaf tree cultivation to reach a total of 100,000 trees.
His Highness highlighted that the second phase will further support the National Action Plan to achieve carbon neutrality, announced by His Majesty the King, and contribute to Bahrain’s environmental goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2060. He stressed the importance of accelerating afforestation efforts to meet the Kingdom’s environmental objectives.
The Ghaf tree is known for its resilience and adaptability to harsh environmental conditions, particularly in desert regions. Its deep roots enhance soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, while its ability to withstand drought and high soil salinity makes it well-suited to the region’s climate. In addition to its environmental benefits, the Ghaf tree also adds distinct aesthetic value to landscapes.
