Harare, Zimbabwe: A head-on collision involving a minibus carrying churchgoers and a haulage truck killed at least 27 people near Chivhu, Zimbabwe, highlighting the country's ongoing road safety crisis.

The crash occurred Friday evening approximately 140 kilometers south of Harare, on a remote stretch of road. Police reported that the foreign-registered truck was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it struck the oncoming minibus, which was transporting worshippers to a religious conference.

Seven other passengers sustained injuries in the impact. State broadcast footage from the scene showed the minibus reduced to a charred, mangled shell on the roadside following the collision.

The incident underscores severe infrastructure and safety challenges across Zimbabwe. Fatal traffic accidents occur frequently throughout the country, driven by pothole-ridden roads suffering from long-term underfunding, poor driving standards, and the widespread reliance on overloaded minibus taxis.
