The High Criminal Court of Appeal has scheduled February 23 to issue its verdict in the appeal filed by a mechanic. He was previously sentenced by the Court of First Instance to 15 years in prison, fined BD10,000, and had seized items confiscated.
The court also ordered his deportation after serving his sentence, in connection with a case involving drug smuggling and drug use.
The Public Prosecution charged the 24-year-old defendant, who works as a mechanic, with smuggling and possessing cannabis (hashish) with intent to traffic during 2025, in violation of the law.
Authorization
He was also charged with smuggling and possessing morphine and the psychotropic substances pregabalin and clonazepam for personal use without legal authorization.
According to the case details, a customs officer at Bahrain International Airport testified that on August 24, while inspecting luggage arriving from an Asian country through the X-ray scanner, he became suspicious of the defendant’s suitcase and marked it with an “X” for thorough inspection.
The officer added that upon the defendant’s arrival, he was diverted from the green channel to the red channel.
Denial
When asked whether he had anything to declare, the defendant denied carrying any prohibited items.
However, upon inspecting the suitcase, officers found a tobacco-like substance suspected to be narcotics weighing approximately 2.2 kilograms, along with 29 capsules suspected to be psychotropic substances, in addition to 30 narcotic pills concealed among the clothing inside the bag.
