No Need to Worry: Expert on Bahrain’s Monday Tremor

Manama: A light 3.3-magnitude tremor recorded in Bahrain early yesterday is “no cause for concern,” according to Professor Waheeb Al Nasser, an applied physics expert at the Arabian Gulf University.

He explained that tremors of this level are classified as very weak and occur hundreds of thousands of times worldwide each year – usually detected only by monitoring equipment rather than by people.

Professor Al Nasser said the only surprising aspect was the location, as Bahrain lies far from global seismic belts. “From an impact standpoint, this type of tremor is extremely minor and should not worry the public,” he noted.

The comments came after the Meteorological Directorate confirmed that a 3.3-magnitude earthquake was detected at 2:58 am in central Bahrain, north of Askar. Despite its low intensity, residents in areas such as Hamad Town, Zallaq and Askar reported feeling slight vibrations.

The Directorate described the quake as weak and emphasised that such events generally do not cause any damage. Experts say earthquakes only begin to be clearly felt at magnitudes above 4.0, and even then, they remain within the range of light, non-destructive activity.
