The First High Criminal Court has sentenced an Asian man to 15 years in prison, fined him BD5,000, and ordered his permanent deportation after serving the term, for trafficking and promoting narcotic substances.
The case began when Customs officers grew suspicious of a parcel arriving from a European country and addressed to the defendant.
Package
A scan revealed unclear contents, and upon inspection, the package was found to contain cat supplies stuffed with tightly sealed bags of narcotics.
The Anti-Narcotics Directorate was immediately alerted, and a sting operation was launched.
The defendant was arrested when he arrived to collect the parcel.
Questioning
He admitted during questioning that he knew the package contained drugs. Investigations showed that the man, a former mobile phone shop employee, had been recruited by an unidentified individual to distribute narcotics through “dead drop” postal deliveries.
He confessed to receiving BD10 for each delivery, repackaging the drugs for sale, and creating WhatsApp groups to coordinate with addicts and potential buyers.
