Mass Shooting in South African Township Leaves 11 Dead

Durban: At least 11 people died in a mass shooting in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, according to local reports.

The shooting occurred late on Tuesday night, September 22, when unknown assailants reportedly entered a house with 14 individuals inside and began fire. At least 11 people were killed inside, and the condition of the other victims is unclear.

Police and the eThekwini District Tracing Team have been dispatched to the area to gather evidence while investigations try to identify and find the perpetrators. The motivation for the shooting has yet to be determined, and no arrests have been recorded in the initial accounts.

According to local broadcaster eNCA, the attackers pushed everyone into a room before shooting them and then set fire to one of the victims' cars. Residents reported the incident as shocking, claiming they had never seen anything like it. South Africa has one of the world's highest murder rates, with over 60 people slain each day, and soldiers were deployed to violence hotspots in March to assist police attempts to combat rampant crime.
