Little India project launched

The Little India in Bahrain project, organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) in association with The Indian Embassy and Samskrithi Bahrain was launched yesterday. 

As part of the project, historical areas in Manama Souq were decked up to make them among the most popular attractions in the country. The launching ceremony held at the Souq featured various traditional Indian dances and cultural shows. 

BACA President Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, said that the project opened up avenues for cultural exchange between the two nations. Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa commended the work done by BACA and highlighted the relationship between Bahrain and India. 

Indian Ambassador Alok Kumar Sinha, various religious and cultural leaders, businessmen and members of the public also were present. 

The event also featured Indian traditional dances such as Tiruvadira, Rajasthan folk, Punjabi dance, Maharastra folk dance, Gujarati folk dance Dandiya and Garbaa, Bihar folk dance and Bhangra. 

In addition, a documentary about the Indian community was unveiled at the event. 

Speaking to DT News, Manama Traditional Market Committee Deputy Chairman Mahmood Al Namlit said the project would be a huge boost to the Manama Souq. 

“It is great to see such a successful event launch and such a huge crowd that has come here. It has certainly created a buzz, and now we need to maintain this enthusiasm. I am confident this project will immensely benefit the Souq and make it more appealing to tourists as well as for the residents and citizens of Bahrain,” he added.

“The Indian community has contributed to Bahrain’s economy, its infrastructure, as well as its social and cultural history. This project will celebrate the great history and the enduring fruitful relationship between Bahrainis and Indians and show the continued commitment to strengthening these precious ties,” BACA stated.
