Paris: The world experienced its second-hottest May on record, while Western Europe was hit by an unusually early and intense heatwave, the EU's climate monitor said.
Countries including Britain, France, Ireland and Portugal recorded record temperatures as hot air from North Africa pushed "feels-like" temperatures to as high as 40C in some areas.
Copernicus said global average temperatures reached 15.81C in May, second only to May 2024. Ocean temperatures were also the second-highest on record for the month.
Scientists warned that climate extremes are becoming increasingly common as conditions shift towards El Nino, which has an 80 per cent chance of developing in the coming months and could drive global temperatures to new highs in 2027.
