Two Passenger trains derail in India
New Delhi
Several passengers were reportedly feared dead as two express trains derailed while crossing a bridge on a river in Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police officials said.
Kamayani Express going to Varanasi from Mumbai derailed near Harda, about 160 km from state capital Bhopal, around 11.45 PM while the Janata Express derailed almost at the same time.
According to officials causalities are feared.
A relief train carrying doctors and other railway staff is reportedly on the way to the accident site, for rescue operations.
"There was water on tracks and the bridge was submerged. So the last bogies of Kamayani Express got derailed. Simultaneously, on the other track the engines and coaches of the Janata Express also got derailed," Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena told to a local news channel.
He also said that some bogies and engines of both the trains are in water.
"Rushing emergency medical & other relief personnel to spot. darkness, water creating hurdles but ordered all possible help. Trying our best (sic), " Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted on the incident.
He further said that the Railway Protection Force personnel and medical staff have been directed to rush to the accident spot.
