Israel's Netanyahu to seek re-election despite Trump doubts, war strains

Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will officially seek re-election in the country's upcoming national vote, his ruling Likud party announced on Wednesday.

The formal confirmation came directly after US President Donald Trump publicly raised doubts regarding whether the 76-year-old leader would choose to run again following a tumultuous, war-strained term. In a brief statement, the Likud party declared that Netanyahu will stand in the upcoming election and, God willing, secure a victory.

The national vote, which must legally take place by October, will be the first since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. Israel’s longest-serving prime minister faces profound domestic political pressure, ongoing corruption charges, and severe strain from leading the nation through three consecutive years of warfare.

Recent local think-tank polling indicates that 61 percent of the Israeli public believes Netanyahu should not stand for office, and projecting data shows his right-wing coalition might fail to secure a parliamentary majority.
