Rio de Janeiro: Brazilian filmmaker Orlando Senna, a prominent figure closely associated with the country's influential Cinema Novo movement, has passed away at the age of 86.

Brazil's Ministry of Culture announced his death on Tuesday, praising his extensive work, generosity, and lifelong dedication to defending culture as an instrument of social transformation. While honoring his vast contributions to Brazilian culture, the ministry's official statement did not provide a specific cause of death.

Born in 1940 in Lençóis, Bahia, Senna dedicated over five decades of his career to film, television, journalism, theater, and cultural management. He achieved major recognition for co-directing the celebrated drama ‘Iracema: Uma Transa Amazônica’ alongside Jorge Bodanzky, which was set against the military dictatorship's occupation of the Amazon.

Internationally, Senna headed Cuba's International School of Film and Television from 1991 to 1994. Later, in the 2000s, he directed national policies as the head of the National Audiovisual Secretariat and pioneered the creation of the public broadcaster, TV Brasil.
