Macron says trust in France institutions \'at stake\' after girl\'s killing

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron warned that trust in the nation’s institutions is at stake after the handling of a suspect in an 11-year-old girl’s killing triggered a political crisis.

The body of the victim, identified as Lyhanna, was found in an abandoned grain silo last week after she vanished from Fleurance on May 29.

Public outrage erupted when investigations revealed that the 41-year-old key suspect had twice previously been formally accused of child sexual abuse and rape, yet prior judicial proceedings had stalled or been completely dropped.

Labeling the structural failure as completely unacceptable, Macron stated that authorities cannot look the victim\'s family in the face and claim everything went well.

The massive institutional breakdown prompted an emergency meeting where the Prime Minister demanded administrative probe findings within two weeks. Acknowledging a severe system failure, the Justice Minister publicly apologized to the nation for failing to protect the child.
