Johannesburg: At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured after more than 10 gunmen opened fire in a late-night attack in a Johannesburg informal settlement, police said on Wednesday.

According to investigators, the suspects arrived in a minibus and moved through the Cleveland settlement, shooting at residents at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle. The victims included nine men and three women. Eleven people died at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries in hospital.

Police have launched a manhunt, and no arrests have been made. Authorities said the motive remains under investigation, although the attack bore similarities to violence linked to organised crime groups involved in illegal mining activities.

The Cleveland area has been associated with illicit mining operations, where rival gangs often engage in violent turf wars to control abandoned gold mines and illegal trade networks. However, police said it was too early to confirm whether such groups were responsible for the killings.
